In connection with the signing of the Treaty on the Accession of the Republic of Bulgaria to the European Union and pursuant to art.25, para.1 of the LBNB, the Bulgarian National Bank will put in circulation, from 25 April 2005, a silver commemorative coin with partial gold plating ‘Bulgaria – European Union’, nominal value BGN 1.95583, issue 2005.

The face of the coin features the logo of the Bulgarian National Bank with the year 1879 written on the ribbon. Under the ribbon are written the year of issue 2005 and the nominal value – 1.95583 LEVA (BGN 1.95583). In circumference is the wording ‘БЪЛГАРСКА НАРОДНА БАНКА’ (BULGARIAN NATIONAL BANK).

The reverse of the coin features a fragment of a fresco in the Kazanlak Thracian tomb which dates back to the late 4th and the early 3rd c. BC, and in circumference there are 12 stars and the inscription ‘EU’ (the initials of the European Union in English) and ‘БЪЛГАРИЯ’ (BULGARIA), with a rose depicted between them.
