The obverse of the banknote features a portrait of the writer Aleko Konstantinov, figures and elements connected with the tourist movement in Bulgaria, the title page of his travel notes ‘To Chicago and Back’, vertically printed texts ‘Алеко Константинов’ (Aleko Konstantinov) and ‘1863 – 1897’, and the value of the banknote in numbers and letters.

The reverse of the banknote features elements connected with Aleko Konstantinov’s life and works, and the value of the banknote is written in numbers and letters.

 The banknote was designed by Kiril Gogov.

Technical Characteristics

Background colour – green.

Material – banknote paper tinted in green.

Dimensions – 141 х 79 mm.

Security Features

Raised print – The obverse features Aleko Konstantinov’s portrait, the texts ‘БЪЛГАРСКА НАРОДНА БАНКА’ (Bulgarian National Bank) and ‘СТО ЛЕВА’ (100 levs), the number ‘100’, the vignette on the right side over the hologram stripe and the text ‘100 ЛЕВА’ (100 levs) on it.

Security thread – A dark metallic thread embedded in the paper, with a bright minitext ‘БНБ 100’ (BNB 100), which is visible on both sides of the banknote when it is held up to the light; the thread partially appears on the reverse and has a hologram effect.

Watermark – A semi-tone image of the portrait on the banknote and the initials ‘БНБ’ (BNB) are visible on both sides of the banknote when it is held up to the light.

Hologram stripe – When the banknote is swayed, an edelweiss image or Aleko Konstantinov’s profile alternate with the number ‘100’ and the minitext ‘ЛЕВА’ (levs), changing their colour.

See-through register – There is a rectangular chessboard field in the middle of the right half of the obverse, and when the banknote is held up to the light the number ‘100’ is visible in it on both sides of the banknote.

Optically variable ink (OVI®) – When the banknote is swayed, the edelweiss image in the right half of the obverse changes its colour from violet to green.

Hidden image – When the banknote is tilted, the number ‘100’ appears in the bottom left corner, in Aleko Konstantinov’s shoulder.

Microtext on the obverse – There are horizontal lines with the text ‘АЛЕКО КОНСТАНТИНОВ’ (Aleko Konstantinov), the years ‘1863 1897’ and ‘СТО ЛЕВА 100 ЛЕВА’ (100 levs) in the background to the left of the portrait, and two vertical lines to the right of the portrait with the text ‘АЛЕКО КОНСТАНТИНОВ’.

Microtext on the reverse – Microtext fully covers Aleko Konstantinov’s jacket.

UV-fluorescence on the obverse – Under ultra-violet light (365 nm), in the area to the right of the hologram stripe the band of repeating numbers ‘100’ and the serial numbers appear in green, and the tourists and the right half of the edelweiss appear in red.

UV-fluorescence on the reverse – Under 365 nm two edelweisses on the right side of the banknote appear in green, Aleko Konstantinov’s tie and signature, the face of the monument and the bullet’s trajectory appear in red, the security thread appears in red, blue and green; under ultra-violet light (254 nm) the two edelweisses appear in orange.

Mark for visually impaired people – In the bottom right corner of the obverse there is a relief image of a triangle pointing downwards and a rectangle underneath, with its shorter side as its base.
