As of 8 May 2026, the process of withdrawing lev banknotes and coins from circulation and putting euro banknotes and coins into circulation is proceeding in accordance with the applicable regulatory framework and the approved operational plans.
As of the reporting date, 92.52% of the lev banknotes and coins circulating at the beginning of 2025 have been withdrawn, and BGN 2.3 billion in banknotes and coins remain outside the vaults of the Bulgarian National Bank.
As of the same date, the euro banknotes and coins in circulation (net issuance) total over EUR 8.4 billion, ensuring the smooth operation of the payment system and serving the economy and the public.
As from 1 February 2026, the euro is the sole legal tender in the Republic of Bulgaria.
