Clarifications and Warning of the European Supervisory Authorities on Crypto-Assets
In connection with the implementation of the requirements of the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA), the European Supervisory Authorities have issued clarifications on crypto-assets, as well as a warning about possible risks of using or investing in crypto-assets, including the risks of fraud and fraudulent schemes.
The clarifications explain what crypto-assets are, the types of crypto-assets, and which ones are regulated under MiCA and which ones are not. The guidance outlines which crypto-asset service providers are regulated in the EU, where to check if the provider is authorised in the EU, and the risks of engaging with unauthorised providers in the EU.
The warning on crypto-assets presents the key risks consumers may encounter when using or investing in crypto-assets, namely: extreme price movements, liquidity risks, misleading information, fraud, scams and hacks, limited protection and product complexity.
